Thanks snapcracklepop, I feel a bit better now.
And yes - the tumour was very pale and jelly like, not dark or bloody. The skin over it was very vascular - great big veins feeding it. I am having a vet look at it in their inhouse lab tomorrow - so we will see what types of cells are present. There is always a chance to send it off still if the overview sample raises any questions - as like you say, if it is a tumour, it is worth finding out what type? If it is just fatty, we go another way...
I will get a forum friend who should be albe to help me get everything uploaded from the before, during and afters.
Thanks again for your time SCP - sad about the lifespan update though...

If the operated jird takes a bit longer to convalesce, you might think of putting him in a hamster cage e.g. in the big cage, just so that the others don't completely lose track of his scent. Mongolians are terrible in this regard, but I found that reintegrating a patient into the group after 3-4 days worked fine. A couple of weeks might be pretty long.

Great news - I will certainly do that if he recovers over the next 24 hours.
I can't watch them tomorrow, so I don't want anything to happen while I am not there. -

Oh, and here is how we inject medication into a bienenmade / waxworm. We always see that the jirds are "hooked" on waxworms, tho they will eat up to 9 a day if given the chance (so delicious). Maybe one a week, you can get them frozen or fresh at a fishing store -fresh they don't last that long maybe 1-2 weeks in fridge. Then if persians are very weak, sick, or old and dietary restriction isn't necessary anymore (they usually get super skinny when sick or old), waxworms and banana and pepped up gruel like carrot or pumpkin babyfood with nutpowder and a bit of honey will keep them going a long time. Any calorie counts and it doesn't seem to do them damage - never saw a FAT Persian, just giant alpha males, adorable.

Thanks for the food tips - he is very fussy still and mushed stuff isn't doing the trick right now. I have wax worms on order - and will go buy bananas this afternoon for sure.
He wasn't keen on my ground nuts, or oats - and turned his nose up at my formula. Hmm, will have to keep trying... -
Non-lab testing: vets and exotic nurses examining and observing the removed growth - plus knowing its location and speed of growth - are all assuming liposarcoma sadly.
Results aren't back from the actual lab yet to confirm either way.
He is recovering very well from the operation, and although he isn't using the arm/hand for everything (and is holding it 'up' a bit when not using it) - he is using it to walk, hold certain foods and to help shred cardboard tubes... He's eating well and the waxworms are going down a treat! -
All in all, I think it sounds pretty good, Jaffar...
I believe there is a decent chance that the entire tumor was excised and your fellow will recuperate and live out his normal lifespan ...I'm always impressed at how rugged all gerbils are, they can make amazing comebacks.
Lovely with the waxworms, and he can eat as many as he wants like 5-6 while convalescing...main thing is to keep up his strength.
When ours had the gout think, they could sometimes not use their paw or paws so well to fish for stuff and holding food, but they were creative in holding thing with their "wrists" or eating from the ground.
Sesame seeds are fairly well like too. At the age of 4 I ususally even keep a small bowl of sesame seeds/hazelnut powder that they can eat from any time - diet not that important at that age. They have very healthy metabolisms. Eating 6 waxworms is kind of like eating the fat/calorie equivalent of 6 100g chocolate bars...all OK. We never were that sure how much if any of the healthy stuff they actually eat, so much gets carried into the bunker including great treats like pumpkin seeds and peanuts in shell or walnuts, and are ignored. Boring stuff like dried corn kernels or pasta (great activity food to make them run from strewing area to bunker) are never eaten.
Are the stitches self-absorbing?
Any pictures? Like Gerbilus said, try to resize them to about 500 k then upload and place in text/post as "Vorschau", otherwise they come out really huge in size.
All thumbs still held for your little guy, does he have a name?"It's a strange and beautiful world" -
Hello Jaffar,
how is your Persian patient doing?
Hoping for the best,
Snap"It's a strange and beautiful world" -
He is doing very well thank you - fully using the arm and hand as normal now.
His friends didn't seem to engage with him when I used the cage-in-a-cage method, and since them his friends have been sleeping mainly apart. I have been away from home this past week - so I am hoping this week to really get them back together. I wonder if he was the glue that held the group together - and him being gone has strained their relationship. His wound is almost fully healed now - so I have no worries about them over-grooming him.
I totally forgot to post the images too, sorry.. -

What was the end result of the laboratory exam?
I wouldn't worry about the sleeping apart issue - my Persians sometimes slept together, sometimes not, often there is one or two who sleep separately, sometimes or always.
Have you got a hot rock? They LOVE it when older
